Kurt Russell growls his way through the movie and succeeds at playing one of cinema’s cult badasses. Speaking of design, I can’t go through this review without mentioning the iconic anti-hero, Snake Plissken. Of course, this was also done in a time before CGI, so this destroyed version of Manhattan is all just brilliant set design, miniatures, and matte painting. It’s exactly how a dystopian film should look. From beginning to end, this movie is enveloped in darkness and fog and destruction. It is a minor visual masterpiece that perfectly sets the tone. What really grabbed my attention first was how Escape from New York looked. Now with no other choice, Snake wages a one man war with the inmates of Manhattan. As an added incentive, Snake is injected with a small explosive device that will detonate in 22 hours. Before all of the formalities can even be completed, Snake is tasked by New York Police Commissioner Bob Hauk (Lee Van Cleef) to infiltrate Manhattan and save the president and in return all of Snake’s crimes on record will be cleared. Luckily for him, there’s a new prisoner about to be admitted, the notorious soldier and gunslinger Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell). When terrorists force Air Force One to crash land inside the prison walls, the president (Donald Pleascence) finds himself stranded. In 1988, crime in America rises by almost 400% (remember this was made in 1981) forcing the government to create the United States Police Force and also convert Manhattan into a giant maximum security prison surrounded by giant walls. While both of these movies have something good to offer, Escape from New York is a far superior film than its sequel… depending on what you’re looking for. This was a dark, dystopian thrill ride that was a major hit with audiences and critics alike, which is surprising that it took 15 years for the sequel, Escape from L.A., to finally be produced and released. One of his most respected action movies, and in fact one of the most respected movies of his career, is the 1981 film Escape from New York. He’s also known for more action oriented movies like Assault on Precinct 13 and the comedic Big Trouble in Little China. He’s made some of my favorite horror movies, like Halloween and The Thing amongst others. We later see Lena at the end of the movie, captured and most likely arrested along with her accomplices. To me, John Carpenter is an amazing film maker. Kira then smacked Lena which knocked her out and took the ship back home. Only for Kira to clean on to her foot and was to press the button to shut the door. Kira then told Lena that there was still time for her to change, only for Lena to reply by telling Kira that she wants to be the hero that saves the day and opens up the space hatch, so Kira would get sucked into space. What she didn't know was that Kira, who had sneaked onto the ship to stop her, overheard their conversation. She then realized that he was only using her and was upset due to this. He then blamed her for Gary and Scorch messing up his plans and ended the connection. She later contacted Shanker when she was on her ship to Earth, where she discovered that he had a bald spot. Kira and Kip soon escape from their cell. Lena later captured Gary's wife and son Kira and Kip after they saw her and her men bringing Blubonium onto a ship, which she told them that Gary wouldn't be coming back. She replies that there would be more coming, but unbeknownst to her, Shanker really wanted to destroy all alien planets in the Milky Way. She then asked him if he got her present which of course was the Blubonium, which he replies that it was not as much as he was expected. Lena and Shanker later communicate with each other, where Shanker had candles everywhere and wore a wig to hide his bald spot to make it romantic. She and Shanker came up with a plan: to fake an emergency signal on Earth to make Gary and Scorch go to Earth. They made an agreement that if she gives him Blubonium, they can rule the galaxy together. She would later sign up for a space dating site where she met General Shanker. She was BASA's chief and at some point got corrupted to the point she wanted to rule the universe. She was voiced by Jessica Alba, who also played Victoria Knox in Barely Lethal and Samantha Tunnell in Awake. She is General Shanker's fiancee and plans to take over the galaxy with him. Lena is BASA's chief officer and is Gary and Scorch's boss. Traitorous Alien Lena Thackleman is the secondary antagonist of the animated movie Escape from Planet Earth.
